Department of Geology

First step of performing a mining project is prospecting. Meanwhile lithology, stratigraphy, mineralogy, geochemistry, geophysics and other geological features of rock units or mineralized zones are basic and essential data for doing this job. Deducing of needed data is the main duty of KCE dept. of geology, and prospecting.
It is one of the oldest parts of KCE and due to variety of subjects, is usually busier than others. Due to presence of several experts in geology and mine exploration and also because of applying the most updated versions of appropriate softwares and hardwares, KCE department of geology is capable to perform all kind of geological and explorative projects with best quality.
Some of main works of KCE department of geology are as follow:

1. Geology mapping in various scales
We believe that accurate geological map is the base of all kinds of mining activities, therefore preparing of high quality geological map is the main goal of KCE department of geology. Using the last versions of Auto CAD and Arc GIS during the drawing of maps provides an opportunity to present the most useful maps.
According to their scales and purposes, geological map may divide into several types such as atlases, regional and local.

1.1. Atlases
Scale of this kind of geological maps which are useful for national purposes are usually 1/250,000 or 1/100,000 and satellite images or aerial photos are the basic documents for providing them.

1.2. Regional map
This kind of maps of scales 1/25,000, 1/10,000 and 1/5,000 usually prepare for tracking of mineral recourses. Appropriate satellite images and aerial photos are the most common bases of these maps.
KCE geologists attained brilliant results by preparing regional maps.
1.3. Local map
This type of maps of scales 1/1000 and 1/500 are useful for executive purposes in mining or geotechnical projects. They must be accurate so it is necessary to use modern surveying instruments such as total station and accurate bifrequency GPS.
KCE dept. of geology experts are capable of executing all steps of geological mapping by using the most updated methods and applying modern equipments.
2. Geochemical studies
Geochemical studies also carry out by KCE dept. of geology. Mining geologist and mine exploration engineers cooperate for recognizing anomalous areas of any kind of elements or minerals. These studies are carrying out in variety of scales from 1/100,000 to 1/500 and different manners such as lithological sampling, stream sediment surveying and heavy minerals studies.
Arc GIS and Auto CAD are the most common softwares which used for designing of sampling networks, while the Spss is using for processing of data and analytical interpretations.
3. Image processing
Today, using of satellite images and image processing technology are recommended to execute many kinds of projects, especially geological and mine exploration projects. According to this, KCE dept. of geology is completely equipped with high performance computers and also appropriate softwares of image processing like ENVI and Geomatica, and by using of suitable raw data according to scale of projects, preparing of photo-maps is perfectly provided.
Each of these photo – maps includes several information such as lithology, alteration zonality, geological structure, and variety of mineralization types.

4. Sampling
Sampling of all kinds of environment include lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere is also one of the most professional duties of each geologist or mine exploration engineer who works at KCE dept. of geology.
Samples mainly collected from exposed geological units, mineralized zones, trenches, test pits, drilled cores, explorative tunnels, lithogeochemical networks, stream sediments, and topsoils. All the gathered samples prepare for special laboratory studies such as different methods of chemical analysis, paleontological, petrographic, mineralogical, heavy mineral, fluid inclusion and other instrumental studies.
5. Geological surveying of explorative openings
Core logging, trench geological surveying and geological studies along the special traverse are the other part of KCE dept. of geology main job. During this operation, many important geological features will be revealed. Some of them are: lithology, R.Q.D, core recovery, mineralization, texture, structure of rocks and so on.
Well experienced geologists will process all the gathered data and log charts will be provided by using special softwares such as Logplot.
6. Reconnaissance and prospecting
Reconnaissance of mineral indications and also prospecting of metallic and nonmetallic minerals at target areas carry out by KCE dept. of geology with best quality.
During last two decades, KCE indicated several mineral resources for the first time which some of them were unique in Iran untill now, such as igneous titanium mineralization, in North West of Iran.
7. Other related activities
7.1. Geological evaluation and preparing preliminary appraisal of ore deposits.
7.2. Seismology and study of structural geology.
7.3. Environmental and reclamation studies.
